Historically, black people – especially black women – have been confronted with a myriad of inequalities, ranging from socioeconomic, cultural, and health aspects. Consequently, public and political discourses relating to wellness, more often than not, tend to focus on the numerous disparities between black women and the rest of the population. While historical and existing inequalities cannot be overlooked or dismissed, I find it unfitting that the positive side of things is left out of the conversation. In this regard, it’s particularly unfair to the women whose relentless hard work is shifting the balance and improving black women’s wellness. In this spirit of embracing positivity, I’d like us to view wellness in a different light, one that inspires hope while celebrating past and current progress.
