To advocate means to speak up for or defend someone or something. Many of us are very familiar with this concept; we just don’t refer to it as advocacy. When you choose to spend your money with businesses of color instead of large brands, you are being an advocate. When you choose to shop at the local grocer you are advocating for your neighbors. Many of these behaviors become ingrained in us and we consider them “just what we do”. Unfortunately, this habit of being intentional and somewhat particular does not translate over into our health.
